Low-Cost Landscaping
Sticks & Stones

Chuck Caughel & Donna Herrell

With spring here and summer on its way, landscaping is on our minds. Many do-it-yourself methods (and a bit of effort) provide an inexpensive alternative to improve your yard dramatically.

Rocks

Don't buy rocks, they're rocks, rocks should be free. Go for a ride in the country (make a fun day of it) and stop by a couple of farms. Most farmers will gladly let you take all the rocks you want from their pile. Offer them $20.00 and they'll probably help you load them with their tractor. You'll be able to choose the right size, shape and color that you desire compared to the limited selections are often found at landscaping companies.

Timbers

Landscape timbers can be used for a variety of  landscaping needs. They can be used as garden edging, flower beds and when stained make a beautiful sidewalk border.

These timbers are chemically treated wood designed for years of use. They come in 8 ft. lengths and if found on sale cost as low as $2.50 each. They are easily cut using a chainsaw or circular saw (always use eye protection).

Other Uses: Planters, Baskets, Boxes
Tip: Check your local lumber store for designs.

NEXT WEEK: Erosion Control and Coverings / Flowers
